Teaching lets me walk beside students as they discover what they're capable of. Watching confidence grow never gets old.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I began my career in business but eventually realized I wanted work that more directly improved people's lives. While exploring teaching, I volunteered with young children with disabilities through a Special Olympics feeder program and quickly fell in love with the kids and the work. That moment led me to special education, where I've been teaching for over a decade. I've come to see that teaching is a path and a privilege that has shaped who I am and the impact I hope to have in the world.

I had the privilege of watching one of my students grow from a place where even a single commitment in a day could wipe him out to building a full and meaningful life. Over time we worked on managing his energy, planning ahead, and building the confidence to take on more of life. Today he works 25–30 hours a week, is thriving in college, and spends multiple nights a week rehearsing for community theater. Hearing him say that school finally felt like a success is something I'll never forget.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My first instinct was to list all the things I would do for my students. But the longer I thought about it, the more I realized that caring for myself as a teacher and a person is part of caring for them. I would use the funds to give myself the time and space to rest, recharge, and continue doing this work with the energy and presence my students deserve for many years to come. I've come to learn that when teachers are sustained and supported, students feel that too.
