Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a meaningful impact on young people’s lives. Education has always been central to my worldview—it’s one of the most powerful tools for empowerment, particularly for marginalized communities. Growing up, I saw how the right teacher could change the trajectory of a student’s life. I wanted to be that person for others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments was when a quiet Black female student in my class, who rarely spoke, performed a powerful poem she wrote about her experiences. She had struggled with confidence, but that day, she stood tall, her voice unwavering. The entire class was silent, captivated. Afterward, she told me it was the first time she felt truly heard. That moment reminded me why I teach—to create spaces where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to share their truths.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would invest in my research on Black girlhood, expanding access to arts-based programs that empower young Black girls to tell their stories through poetry and creative expression. I’d fund workshops, provide resources for schools, and develop a platform to amplify their voices. Additionally, I’d support my own PhD work, ensuring I can complete my research without financial strain, ultimately using it to impact education policy and create more inclusive learning spaces.
