I came to the USA as a refugee and was an ESL student during my elementary years; learning English was a challenge. Thanks to the help of some very dedicated educators, I was reading above grade level by the 8th grade. Today, I teach a class of entering ELLs (refugees/Immigrants) who have arrived here with the same challenges, dreams, and hopes that I had so many years ago. My calling and passion in life is to help all of my students realize their full potential.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceEvery September, my students walk into the classroom for the first time, shy and fearful. They have left everything and everyone behind and traveled to a new country vastly different from theirs. By the end of the year in June, during our 5th grade graduation, I see my students confidently walk across the stage with their heads held high. They are practicing their newly acquired language skills and are ready to continue their new lives in the USA.
What would you do with the $25,000?To help them succeed in 6th grade next year, I would buy all of my students the necessary technology; 21st-century learning and skills require access to wi-fi at school AND home.
