Virginia Hagman

I love teaching because I am able to give my students independence. I teach children with learning disabilities to read and succeed.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw a need I could fill. My niece was born with brain damage and we were told she'd never speak, ead or live a normal life. Then my daughter began exhibiting signs of learning disability and when I asked for her to be tested. I was repeatedly told I just hadn't done enough for at home period when I finally convinced them to test her. We found out that she had severe deficits and needed some help. Both live normal lives because of teachers.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I met a child last year who was severely impacted by dyslexia, but is in the Gifted and Talented program, he was so quick to pick up anything he tried, but reading eluded him. After working with him for 18 months, something clicked. He has met grade level expectations and exceeded them.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I'd put e-readers in the hands of all my students, I'd send my daughter to college, I'd help those less fortunate students at my title 1 school, and I'd put money towards paying off my student loans.
