As a first-generation Mexican-American female, I understand firsthand the profound impact an educator can have on a student’s life. I’ve encountered both unmotivated professors and those who inspired me to reach beyond what I thought was possible. There were many times I felt uncertain about my path since I had to be a part-time student, yet I achieved my goals. Thus, I want students to find in me the understanding, guidance and support as they pursue their academic, career, and personal goals.

A memorable experience last year was when I took 28 juniors on college tour. Some I had known since first grade as their elementary school counselor a job right after receiving my master's degree. In this trip, we had conversations about life and built great memories. I was especially fond of Anuar a generous, joyful, and bright young man who was to embark on a new stage in his life. Soon after, he tragically died in a car crash and thru my pain, I realized that he was teaching me all along.

If I had $25,000, the possibilities are endless. I would use some of the money to invest in professional development opportunities that aren’t limited to local or state options. I’d seek out workshops, conferences, and courses that would expand my knowledge and skill set on a broader scale, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. This would help me better serve my students and continue to make an impact through education. Knowledge is POWER!
