Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a speech therapist because of my sister. She was selectively mute, and growing up, I watched her struggle to communicate with the world around her. It was heartbreaking to see how misunderstood she often was, how people would overlook her, or assume she didn’t have anything to say, when in reality, she had so much to share. I felt like she deserved a voice—a way to express her thoughts, feelings, and dreams. Watching her journey sparked something in me. I wanted to help her and others

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of the most unforgettable moments in my career as a speech therapist was working with a child with level 3 autism. I introduced him to a communication device and taught him how to use it to express himself. Watching him progress was incredible, but the moment that brings me to tears every time was when he used the device to speak to his mother for the first time. Families of individuals with autism face many challenges, but seeing the joy on his mother’s face made it all worth it.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I would use it to pursue my dream of opening a private practice. For years, I’ve wanted to create a space where individuals of all ages can gain the tools and support they need to communicate confidently. Communication is essential for connection, and I want to help people overcome challenges that prevent them from expressing themselves. Helping others communicate confidently is my passion. This funding would help me take the next step in helping others.
