Tell us why you became a teacher

I knew I wanted to become a teacher in sixth grade. I had an incredible teacher who made learning an exciting adventure. She was sincere and took time with each student to get to know them and incorporate their interests within lessons. This practice kept everyone excited about learning and made connecting to new or abstract material much more manageable. She inspired each of us to work hard and fulfill our dreams. I have been a teacher for over a decade and I am still grateful for Mrs. Dodes.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had the pleasure of teaching in an inclusive school. Watching students make lasting friendships and work together regardless of ability was a beautiful experience. A friendship between a high achieving student and student with Down Syndrome blossomed from the first week of kindergarten. They are now in high school and continue to be best friends. I will never forget their joy and giggles while together inside the classroom as well as when they were outside playing.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning $25,000 would be amazing. I currently teach Reading Intervention. I see groups of elementary school students who need extra help to begin and advance their reading skills. Unfortunately, this is not a permanent position as it is funded by special programs. $25,000 would help me be able to continue doing the work I am passionate about and that my students genuinely need. I hope to keep this position into the next school year and beyond, however funding cuts are an unfortunate reality.
