Register NowI witnessed first hand as a paraprofessional how deep and broken the special education field could be. How underserved, mistreated and overlooked students of special needs were. I decided I wanted to be the person who these students could count on to always being there even when they were at their worst. I wanted to be the person that could show them that they deserved a successful future no matter their upbringing. I became a teacher to advocate for students when no one else would.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI work in an alternative facility; Few students are able to make their way back to their home districts. I was able to help transform a student who did nothing but sleep all day into someone who got a job and returned to his home district to enroll in a certificate program. Watching him walk down our hallway for the last time was incredible. Knowing I helped him see a future he felt no one else was rooting for has been my most memorable teaching moment.
What would you do with the $25,000?It would give me the opportunity to continue making a difference in my students’ lives. I could bring more to the classroom; both in tangible resources as well as the knowledge I could gain by furthering my own education. Everyday I walk into that classroom, it’s not just about me; it’s about each and every one of those students who face a society that sees them as “too late to save.’” In addition to my classroom, I would help my family and pay off school debt I already have.
