Udoh Opiotennione

I love watching the learning process from day 1 to day 190. This is my 24th year as a classroom/bandroom teacher. Relationships are the key.

Tell us why you became a teacher

These answers are usually filled with warm and fuzzy inspirational stories, however my reason for becoming a teacher stems from being overlooked and undervalued. I wanted to be the opposite of my high school band director/teacher. Fortunately there were other awesome teachers like Ms. A. Pifer who saw who I was and provided me with opportunities to grow to love this profession and the impact that it can have on a young person.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience thus far was being able to take a group of beginner 6th graders, and move them to be an accomplished ensemble by 8th grade. Watching them gain skills and a love for music that propelled to them to even greater heights. Teaching is typically a thankless profession where the rewards rarely come in real time. It’s only after years when you realize the impact and importance you have played in their lives.
