Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up I saw the impact that quality educators had on students as they mature and develop into the young adults. Music was something that always meant the world to me. The teachers I had taught me about music, but also about life and compassion. I chose to become an educator so that I may recreate those experiences for others, to help shape their lives not just as musicians but as caring, thoughtful, and empowered individuals who in turn empower the lives of others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was charged with starting a music program from scratch in an inner city high school with students who never played instruments before. They were curious and hungry for knowledge. I ended up having 3 students that wanted to go into music education. They worked with me 6 days a week (including Saturday) to improve for their audition. I connected them with collegiate educators for extra tutoring, and in the end all 3 of them were accepted into music school, despite only starting 2 years prior.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I have spent much of my career buying supplies, music, and instruments to support my students, and provide a quality education. I drive over an hour to work and an hour home everyday. I have a wife and a daughter, with the hopes of expanding my own family more soon. With the prize money I would hope to use it to help buy a home closer to where I work, so that I can continue to give freely to my students, while also being able to fill by bucket with less commuting time and more family time.
