Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up, I loved school! As I got older I began to notice that there were no teachers at my schools who looked like me. I had no role models who shared my background. I wanted to do something that would make the most difference for the most people. At my school, I am able to share the history and background that we have in common. My kids are able to see that they, too, can do whatever they dream of!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experiences have got to be seeing my children grow up, make their dreams come true, and including me in them! I am honored to be invited to their special celebrations. I have been to countless birthday parties, high school and college graduations, quinceaneras,1st Communions, weddings, and unfortunately a few funerals. Our relationships are the most important thing to me! We support each other through the good and bad times!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to do something for my school. Our marquee has seen better days. It is what people see as they pass our campus. I want our community to feel and see the pride we have for our building and students. This is something I have been wanting for years now! I have gone as far as getting quotes and soliciting donations from our neighboring businesses. But as a single parent and teacher, I would have to use some to treat myself and my son for all that we have done without.
