Tell us why you became a teacher

The quote on my email page is this: “What we do in the classroom could possibly echo for a lifetime in the heart of a student.” This is why I became a teacher, not for money, summers off, or even the birthday treats! It’s to make a difference, to make an impact, and to spread the love of learning to all children through deep academic experiences. My greatest joy will always be inspiring students in a positive way so they develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One great memory is from last year. My student had an IEP for reading & behavior issues. After lots of tears & blow ups, she calmed down and started to use the reading strategies I taught in class. She found a book series that was a “just right” fit and fell in love with reading. Each day, she took her books to lunch, to recess, and home at night. As her reading improved, her behavior improved. Now I get hugs in the halls, but best of all, she’ll be a lifelong lover of reading!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’m trying to get a STEM program started at my elementary school. Our state doesn’t support any gifted and talented programs, so any money available for this endeavor is coming from a number of mini grants. $25,000 would allow me to purchase technology, robots, Makey Makey kits, and many other items necessary to run a successful STEM club program after school.
