Tell us why you became a teacher

Life was very difficult for me at home and without my teachers I’m not sure where I’d be. Rather than squashing my “weirdness” my teachers saw it as part of what made me special. They fostered my creativity, introduced me to expansive ways of thinking and living -showing me artists and thinkers throughout time. Going to school was a way to travel in my mind and made me feel like my existence mattered. I’m compelled to instill and return the love for the journey of living and learning on.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I rallied my school to make heart shaped pillows to donate to our local hospital for patients who had open heart surgery. When I was in girl scout I did the same project with my troup after learning that holding something close to your chest can alleviate pain. It was so fun and rewarding to see my students working with staff members and teachers to make this happen. It definitely brought us closer together and our community as well as helped my students see the power of art.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Many of my students have lost friends and family members to gun violence. I would love to donate a portion of this money to a local organization working to help people process their trauma and overcome the cycle. I would also use it to improve my backyard to create a sanctuary and vegetable garden to enjoy and share with others. And lastly but not least would use it to throw all of my students an epic pizza party to celebrate!
