Taylor Carter

While I may never be the most important in my students’ lives, knowing that I can be a small positive influence for them is what I love.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I took a teaching class as an elective for a new program. During the class, we got to go straight into the classroom and experience working with kids. During class, a boy with dirty clothes a size too small did not want to participate. He was shy and lacked confidence. I worked with him throughout the lesson and before I left, he gave me a big hug and smile. I knew then teaching was my life’s purpose because I saw the chance teachers have to change a child’s life one day at a time.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My first year teaching, I taught three sisters. On my first day, they told me they ran their last teacher off and would run me off, too. They did not trust teachers and found themselves in a lot of trouble. Over the next three years, we built a close relationship. That was 6 years ago. They have since graduated and had children of their own. We still talk now. I am grateful for the relationship we were able to build.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would continue pursuing my masters degree as well as pay off a few small debts. I would also like to increase my children’s savings accounts.
