Not to sound cheesy, but I became a teacher because I find purpose in helping others. Guiding students to think critically, find their voices, and believe in themselves is deeply fulfilling. Coming from journalism, I saw the power of storytelling, but in education, I empower the storytellers. I also wanted to give back to those who shaped me and made the classroom a safe space for me when I was growing up. In turn, I cultivate my classroom to be a space for growth, resilience, and discovery.

My most memorable teaching experience is my reading intervention class, often seen as the class no one wants to teach. These high school students enter with elementary-level reading and writing skills, often feeling defeated and not good enough. But through patience, support, and persistence, I have helped them to reach reading at grade level, ready to thrive in core classes. Watching them gain confidence and transition into mainstream courses is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

If selected I’d pay off my student loan; a burden many teachers know too well. I’d also create a scholarship for students who often go unnoticed-- not for top grades or athletics, but for their integrity and empathy. Investing in them ensures they feel valued and supported. I’d name it in honor of my mom, a dedicated teacher who passed away from cancer, in an effort to continue her legacy of kindness by creating safe spaces for students to grow and to know that they have purpose in this world.
