Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the world. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of education as a powerful tool to shape lives and open doors to opportunities. I learned early on that education is a universal language which opens the door to success for all people, in all places. One of the most defining experiences of my career thus far was teaching overseas at an international school in Zambia where I was able to see firsthand how education unlocks potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was when I created and implemented a Reading Buddies program at my school. Older students were paired with younger students to practice reading together. The results of the program were greater than I had imagined. Not only did the younger students improve in their reading skills, but the older students gained a sense of accomplishment and pride in helping others. This fostered a cycle of mutual respect, growth, and learning in our school community.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I would first give back to the school and educators I love so deeply. Teaching is often a thankless job, and I would love nothing more than to thank my school community in a big way. Specifically, I would throw a “Thank You Party” for educators and support staff, with great food and gifts. I would also allocate a portion of the prize money to support the needs of my students (coats, shoes, clothes, etc.). Finally, I’d probably take a long overdue vacation. :)
