Tell us why you became a teacher

When my children were little I would teach them how to read, solve math equations, and look amongst the stars. I loved designing lessons that they would find engaging while also learning. I took great joy in watching them chase their curiosities, seek answers, and the inevitable light bulb moments when it all clicked. Through that experience, I decided I wanted to do that for all children. To create hands-on life life-worthy lessons that cause students to grow into the world around them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

During my first year of teaching, I had a student who often got into trouble or was suspended. Every day they were in my room, I listened, encouraged them, and worked alongside them. I made sure they knew someone believed in them and would push them. No matter how many times they got in trouble, I always picked right back up where we left off. At year’s end, they said, “My favorite thing this year is that Mrs. Lilley never gave up on me.” That moment drives me every day.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My daughter has dreamed of becoming a veterinarian since 4th grade, working tirelessly to earn top grades. Despite scholarships, she still needs help to achieve her goal and make a difference. I also want to invest in my low-income students, providing resources our Title I school can't afford. Supporting her dream and giving my students opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have is my mission. I desperately want to see students of all walks of life receive the best education possible.
