My childhood was infused with learning experiences that molded my beliefs about education. My best memories come from the authentic learning experiences my parents provided for me. They made every camping trip, workday in the garden, and chore a learning opportunity. My elementary school teachers gave me their old teaching manuals and extra papers. They allowed me to play school, even inside the classroom. I became a teacher to inspire and empower children, like I had been.

I aimed to replicate the authentic learning my parents fostered. My National Park unit involved map reading, NP research, book publishing, STEM challenges mirroring real-world park issues, designing a new park within the US, and a call to action. Students earned Junior Ranger badges & were sworn in as JR Rangers by a Park Ranger via Zoom. A student who dislikes reading stated, “This is my favorite unit ever.” I helped my students see the value of our natural world and the need to protect it.

"Tools for Schools" is an annual public event I created to address the impact of poverty on our students in the district. Organizations and businesses offer free services and goods such as vision & health screenings, library cards, first responder interactions, specialized programs & school supplies. With $25,000, I could alleviate the personal financial obligation of hosting this event while continuing to see my dream grow. "Tools for Schools" empowers families with resources for success.
