Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to be a part of something bigger than myself. I get to spend my days helping people learn how to live a life that makes them proud, and how to continue the circle of humanity. Children deserve to feel like they belong, and I believe it is my calling to help others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A student of mine was disengaged in our science class, she would be more worried about her makeup than school, and when checking in with her she was unable to answer questions. During our gravity unit (and a new seating chart), she started to answer more questions, and she even explained a concept to a partner. I called her father that day to celebrate her learning. Her dad began to cry on the phone for how proud he was. With this family connection, this student is now excelling in class.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would supply my 8th grade classroom with the technology and lab equipment that would take learning physical science to the next level and make it more engaging for students. I would also use it for field trip experiences to make the science concepts we learn come to life, at places like the science and technology museum or the field museum in Chicago. Students deserve a quality education and fantastic memories that will last a lifetime, and funding only helps to make that happen.
