I benefited from growing up with amazing teachers who took the time to get to know me. They celebrated with me when I did well at a task and helped me when I needed help. They encouraged me to experiment, wonder about life and how it works, and gave me a space to feel truly special and loved everyday. I realize now mmthat I needed them and their examples in my life. I look back and realize that they were integral in forming me as a person. I wanted to give that gift to children.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceThere are so many! One of my favorites in Indianapolis is helping Kindergarteners to read sounds and form words. One day, I asked one to come read to me. She said, “I CAN’T! Mrs. Henry, I don’t know how to read books yet!” I smiled, “Just try.” She came over and read a whole book to me by herself. She jumped up and screamed, “I CAN read!!!!! My Mom will NEVER believe this!!” That first time reading is ALWAYS special!” AND May 2024 when Tony Kanaan came to wave the flag for our Kindy 500!
What would you do with the $25,000?I would LOVE the opportunity to provide updated Science of Reading based learning materials and supports for our Kindergarten Team and the students at Fox Hill Elementary school in Indianapolis, IN! We recently updated our phonemic awareness and reading curriculum but need many learning tools, decodable books for students at differentiated levels, libraries, and characters from our reading series to help support and motivate our students on their journey.
Colossal is a nationally registered professional fundraiser that inspires people to advocate for themselves and those in need. Through online competitions like America's Favorite Teacher, Colossal offers participants the opportunity to make their mark while also making a big impact.
