Tell us why you became a teacher

Surrounded by the influence of crime and drugs, I realized I didn't quite fit the mold of the community. My 8th-grade teacher volunteered me to participate in the school band- she realized my work ethic and drive to be different would free me from my circumstances. I've been fortunate enough to have a series of teachers who've challenged me to grow and provided me lifetime opportunities to access experiences that would not have been available to me if I continues the path of my peers.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A student who's known for causing chaos asked to join Band in the 6th grade- despite everything I've seen/heard, I enrolled her into my class. We talked about making better choices to improve the quality of her life, but the journey was not easy. By the end of her 8th grade year, we've had a few instances where anyone else would've given up on her, but I remained consistent to teach her not only music, but controlling things in your life that you can control. I'm eternally grateful.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My wife and I have hopes of growing our family, but the journey has been quite the challenge. If selected, it would truly help us financially to make that dream come true. The way we both give 100% to our students, we want to give the same love and effort into someone of our creation or help families who are struggling to provide for their children.
