Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was a troubled kid, who needed an adult that would be patient with me and to recognize my silent cries. Growing up, teachers didn’t notice the little outbursts I would have because something was challenging for me. Instead, they would send me to the office, which solved nothing. I wanted to be someone who recognizes student struggles and helps them when it’s needed, even if a child knows it or not. I always want to be a safe space for children, no matter what.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable moment as a teacher was when I was able to exit one of my students from their IEP. After 4 years of hard work supporting the students’ reading and writing, the student met grade level requirements and I felt so fulfilled as their teacher. The parents were so excited and the student was too. This taught me that with early intervention and hard work, students can do anything they set their minds to and that teachers are fully capable of supporting that as well.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to help pay off my student loans so I can continue my education and goal in becoming a principal.
