Tell us why you became a teacher

I just love solving puzzles and having that sense of accomplishment when you finish them. To find out that math is so much the same as puzzles in the real world was exciting. I knew I wanted to share that feeling and help others find the awe in mathematics. I have definitely helped some of my students discover that they could be engineers, scientists and mathematicians. A blessing I can be proud and grateful for!!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student in my early years of teaching in a basic math class. He often struggled with his academics, especially his math. Something between us just clicked. Soon he started answering questions in class and excelling in his math. He went on to take math all four years of high school math instead of the minimal 3. A few years after he graduated I ran into him and he let me know he was doing great and credited our time together in class to his success in his career.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I have a little community project I would love to start up here in my small town of 50 people. Recently the senior center had to close their doors. I would love to renovate the building, add a few hotel rooms and try to get the building self sufficient so that we can use it as a community building. I would love to host free breakfast/coffee time for the seniors like they used to and create a place to gather for events. It will cost more than $25,000, but it is a great start!
