Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in children’s lives the way some of my teachers did for me. Growing up, school was often a safe space where I felt supported, challenged, and encouraged to dream big. I saw how much impact a caring, dedicated teacher could have—not just academically, but emotionally and socially—and I knew I wanted to create that same experience for others.I’ve always had a passion for helping others, and teaching felt like the perfect way to channel that.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences happened during my second year as a first-grade teacher. I had a student named James, who was bright but incredibly shy. He rarely spoke in class, avoided eye contact, and often hesitated to participate in group activities. It wasn’t long before I realized James was struggling with a lack of confidence and feeling like he didn’t belong. My mission became clear: to create an environment where James could feel seen, heard, and valued.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were awarded $25,000, I would use it to make a lasting impact on my students, my classroom, and the community. Here's how I would allocate the funds: A portion of the funds would go toward advancing my skills as an educator. I’d attend workshops, conferences, or training programs focused on Whole Brain Teaching strategies, trauma-informed teaching, or culturally responsive education. By continuing to grow as a teacher, I can better serve my students and inspire their success.
