Teaching brings me so much joy. I spent the last 11 months in health treatments in the hospital and I couldn’t wait to return to my students

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I love helping students-my mom called me the Pied Piper. I hope to inspire youth to pursue ideas in science and become motivated and positive citizen scientists. I wasn't given many science opportunities as a girl in a rural school. I was even told that I didn't belong in the science classes with the boys when I got to college. I truly wanted to become a teacher to allow students to pursue their own interests without limitations.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my students had numerous behavioral challenges- and was kicked out of many schools and classes before coming to mine. He ended up telling everyone I was his favorite teacher even when I wasn't sure I had made a connection. He then took two more classes with me. He went on to use his science knowledge and pursued a career in HVAC. He is a great worker and positive person now. He will forever be my family.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Quite honestly, I’d pay off a lot of my medical bills for current treatments. Then I would go on more fieldtrips with my students. I’d really love to bring my students to the ocean. I want to spend more time doing fun things with my students while I can. I love going into the community with them and exploring the science that is all around them.
