Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’ve always wanted to change the world. I believe the best way to change the world is by making a difference in the lives of my students. I want to teach them not only school subjects but compassion and empathy and help them to succeed in a world that’s not always kind. I hope to show them what they are capable of and give them the skills they need to go above and beyond expectations so that they can also make a difference in the world.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It’s so hard to choose just one, there are literally moments every day that are memorable. Last year I was able to take all of my students downtown to help set up for a big event. We spent two days blowing up balloons and painting signs and watching them learn how to interact and work with others. The second day a local business donated enough for me to be able to take them all to a buffet after working. I teach special education and the pure joy and happiness on their faces was amazing.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would donate some money first to the local church that helps the school when they can, buy the supplies my classroom desperately needs and then try to catch up a few bills with whatever is left over.
