Tell us why you became a teacher

I always loved working with children. From babysitting to camp counselor, it has always been my life. I started as a science teacher which was a dream- from nature to airplanes to electricity; I loved sharing my passion with children. Now I teach 3rd grade and I can creatively share the other subjects too. The joy and excitement these children have about school is unmatched. I am fortunate to be a part of this early development and help kids develop their passions.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I taught science for 20 years. The most memorable, once in a career experience that I want to share happened recently. I received a long letter from a former student sharing how he is going to MIT because of me. I encouraged his love of science and told him, when he was 8, that he is so smart he is going to make a huge difference in the world. I also said to remember me when he gets big awards. My words carried him through his high school years. That letter validated my whole career.

What would you do with the $25,000?

We recently renovated our house. I had to borrow money from my retirement system. I would love to pay some of that back. I would also like to take my family on vacation since we haven’t been on one in a couple of years.
