My teachers are the reason I'm here. I had many challenges growing up, but my teachers always supported me. The best way I can thank them, is to provide as much support for my students as I can. I teach orchestra. Music allows students to learn a language, how to connect and to communicate. When the students share their knowledge, lift each other up and strive to be their best selves, we create an environment that is healthy and dynamic. I'm grateful everyday that I get to be teacher.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I've been teaching for 20 years. I started with 40 returning students and now, we have over 280 string players and my memories are many: my 4 year old jumping into my arms while conducting a holiday concert, performing for educators at CASMEC, seeing the students eyes light up performing with artists and guests, the beginners performing for the first time every year and the bittersweet feeling of our last concert when we say goodbye to our 8th graders. A life filled with great moments.

What would you do with the $25,000?

While I always had my mom, we didn't have very much growing up. Now, life is good and our family has more than enough. Teaching in the public schools, many of my students can't afford lessons or school trips. This money will support our orchestra program as we provide access for all of our students. It would help pay for instruments, music coaches, special guests, scholarships, financial aid and concert experiences. Every child should have access regardless of their socioeconomic status.
