Tell us why you became a teacher

My mom taught for 42 years and inspired me to become a teacher. I knew I wanted to work with kids in some capacity. I had some amazing teachers while I was in school, but I also had some that made me feel alienated, so I always wanted to make sure my classroom is a place kids feel safe to be themselves. I think and hope I have accomplished that! I also love reading and want to inspire my students to fall in love with the joy of reading. I have bonded with so many kids over books!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I am the student council advisor, and every year we raise money and go shopping for the holidays for kids in our area. It is always such a rewarding experience! The students get so into it and budget every last item so they can get the children as much as possible. They love giving the gifts to the guidance counselor (who then distributes the gifts to the families) and seeing her reaction! They are so proud.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use some of it to invest in my own children’s college education. I would also love to set up a Little Free Library outside of my house or even the school! I also have a podium that is on its last leg, literally, so I would also like to replace that.
