Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was inspired by an incredible teacher: my mother. She not only showed me what it was like to work hard, but to have empathy, compassion and show kindness to everyone you encounter. I wanted to be an inspiration to other kids the same way my mom inspired me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was my first year of teaching, which was also the first year post-pandemic (2021-2022). Working in a Title I school, with 14/16 of my students being EMLs, and figuring out how to teach was not a walk in the park. I worked (at least) 10 hour days each day, trying to beat support my students and get my bearings around teaching. That year, I was awarded as rookie teacher of the year. I could not believe that all of my hard work had actually paid off.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000 I would invest in my future career goals in opening a tutoring business for low-income families, or a pre-school. Both of these endeavors support student development at the most critical phases of their lives.
