My path to becoming an educator wasn’t straightforward, but I’m grateful for how it unfolded, shaping me into who I need to be for my students. My father wanted me to pursue pharmacy, and as the dutiful eldest daughter, I tried. After being rejected from pharmacy school, I applied to both the English and Secondary Education master’s programs. The School of Education responded first, launching a journey that allows me to inspire my students: the path doesn’t have to be straight.

At the end of my first year teaching, I was called to the office after students were caught sneaking alcohol on their 8th-grade class trip. My principal shared that one student in particular asked to talk to me. When I walked in, the student and I both burst into tears. He apologized for disappointing me; I advised him to learn from this and forgive himself because we all make mistakes. Seventeen years later, this moment remains a powerful reminder of the impact of teacher-student relationships.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My favorite time of year is also the busiest—the early decision college application process. As it stands now, I often have to choose between working extra jobs to make ends meet or staying after school to help students with editing their essays. The 25K would alleviate financial stress, freeing me to help even more students feel confident about their writing. In turn, these students would have greater access to opportunities, further empowering them to break barriers and achieve their goals.
