Tell us why you became a teacher

My deeply challenging experiences in grade school give me a unique perspective, one that can deeply resonate with students who may be facing similar challenges. By choosing to become a teacher, I made it my life’s work to create a safe space for growth, understanding, and empathy. I’ve already experienced the impact a compassionate teacher can have, and now I have the opportunity to be that source of support, encouragement, and guidance for others who may need it the most.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Teaching in under-served communities comes with its own challenges, specifically families in shelters. I had a 3rd grader living in a home. He was reading at a kindergarten level, he would fight kids and even stole money from me. One day I saw him with his little sister and he was gentle with her. He was her caregiver. I knew that this 8 year old took that money for his family. After introducing him to graphic novels and giving him choices, he flourished.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’ve spent my life learning how to be the best advocate for families of all colors. Theres no one child or situation that will drive me away from what I do, but there’s only so much I can do. If I won $25,000 it could be another tool for me to help these communities. I would hold and grow this money until a time comes where the people I serve needs it. I know how important it is to use my privilege in the right way and this money could cause powerful change that I couldn’t make otherwise.
