I became a teacher because I love working with middle-grade students and sharing my passion for reading. As an avid reader, I wanted to help students find books that resonate with their lives. Becoming a language arts teacher—and now a librarian—allows me to connect students with stories that spark excitement and curiosity. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a hesitant reader light up with a book they love. Helping students find that joy is why I teach.

My most memorable experience was teaching in a rural Native Alaskan village during my first two years. I became part of the community, welcomed into students' families, and supported them in many ways. A highlight was taking students to Nome, AK, where we tried airplane simulators, practiced woodworking, and learned about the subsistence lifestyle they live. It was an incredible experience that deepened my connection to my students and their culture.

As a librarian, I would use the $25,000 to buy updated, flexible furniture for the library and classroom spaces. The library is a hub of learning, but we lack functional furniture that supports movement, collaboration, and engaging lessons. This investment would create a more dynamic and welcoming space for students to read, explore, and learn in new ways.
