Teaching wasn’t my initial career choice, but it’s the one that found me. Once I began, it became the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my life. The impact I’ve made continues, as I still hear from former students, some of whom left my classroom over 20 years ago. Their continued connection makes every day in the classroom worthwhile, proving the lasting return on my investment in this profession.

I once had a nonverbal autistic student who made incredible progress in my class. By the time he left, he was speaking and accepted into one of Detroit’s top schools. After moving to North Carolina during the pandemic, he graduated high school with honors and is now in college. His family included me in his celebration, expressing gratitude for my role in his journey, reminding me of the lasting impact we can have as educators.

I’ve always wanted to start a mentoring program for inner-city girls. Having worked in the schools I once attended, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges they face. I plan to use funds to launch a nonprofit that will inspire these girls, showing them that where we start doesn’t define where we can go. Through mentorship, I hope to empower them to reach beyond their circumstances and realize their full potential.
