I love teaching because I get to help students learn to advocate for themselves in one of the hardest times of their lives… middle school.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I realized during my own education that I had a privilege that many students across the United States do not have; a supportive and engaged adult at home. I became a teacher so I could be that support and advocate that many students are missing in their education. If they need an encouraging word or support, I’m there to tell them I’m proud and more importantly, to tell them “you should be proud of yourself” when they overcome academic or personal obstacles.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was teaching a combination class of first and second graders during the first year back from online learning (when kids were required to wear masks). I thought I was prepared for anything that could happen; good or bad. I remember introducing myself and hearing a strange noise. A poor first grade girl had thrown up in her mask and didn’t know what to do so she brought it to me at the front of the classroom. For some reason this moment (and that sound) has stuck with me throughout my teaching.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to be given $25,000, I would use part of it to take my sixth grade students to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose. Egypt is a very large unit in my curriculum and I know students would love to see artifacts (there is a real mummy on display!). Unfortunately, due to large budget cuts, we will not have field trips next year and have yet to have the opportunity to take them. With the remaining money, I would pay off my undergraduate debt and my car in order to save for a home.
