Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe language opens doors. My experience teaching in Costa Rica and tutoring ESL students showed me how powerful language learning can be, especially for students facing socioeconomic challenges. Now, as a high school Spanish and ENL teacher, I create an inclusive, engaging environment where all students feel valued and capable. My goal is to inspire confidence, build connections, and help students see their potential—both in language and in life.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments was taking my students to Costa Rica and watching them have life-changing experiences, using the Spanish I had taught them in real conversations. The most special moment was when my U.S. students met my former Costa Rican students—they played volleyball together, laughing as they exchanged Spanish and English. Seeing them break language barriers and connect through shared experiences reminded me why I teach—to open doors and change lives.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would create more life-changing language experiences for my students. I’d fund travel opportunities for those who can’t afford them, giving them the chance to immerse themselves in Spanish-speaking cultures. I’d also invest in classroom resources to make language learning more interactive and engaging. My goal is to break barriers—whether financial or linguistic—so all students can see the world beyond their own and gain the confidence to use language in real life.
