Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was an assistant first for 5 years! I started my journey in special Ed and was terrified. I didn't want to mess up! I quickly learned that it is all about making connections first. Once that student/teacher relationship is built, that is when learning can take place. I never wanted to take the chance to go back to school, because as a single mom, I just didn't think I could make it work. It is because of the students that I crossed paths with that I took a chance.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience was when I taught a nonverbal child how to spell their name through using sign language! He was so excited and once he learned how to spell his name in that way he began to write his name! A super proud moment for us both!

What would you do with the $25,000?

This is my first year as a teacher and I would use the money to put sensory bins and sensory items in our classroom. I would also use the money to purchase items for my students to to have a "life skills" area in our room. Creating an environment where they can thrive.
