Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to make a difference in the lives of students who are often underestimated. Watching my special education students accomplish things that people always told them they would never be able to do—that is my everything. Seeing their confidence grow as they realize their potential inspires me every day. Teaching allows me to be part of their journey, celebrating their victories and helping them overcome challenges. It’s the most fulfilling and meaningful work I could ever do.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was receiving a heartfelt letter from a former student who is now in graduate school. They wrote about how my belief in their abilities and encouragement helped them persevere through challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Knowing I played a small role in their journey toward achieving their dreams was incredibly humbling and rewarding. It’s moments like this that remind me why I love teaching and the lasting impact it can have on their lives.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would do a few things. First, I will throw the best end-of-year field day my school has ever seen to celebrate all of our students AND staff. Second, I will make sure my classroom has the tools necessary to best support my students. Third, I will do anything and everything I can in Hawaii and know that I do not have to worry about debt when I get home.
