Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because my former 4th grade teacher’s passion for her career ignited a spark in my heart. I saw how patient she was with her students, myself included, and I told myself that I’d do the same for children one day in the future. I love helping others, guiding them in the right direction, watching their “a-ha!” moments, and watching them grow in all aspects. This is why I became a teacher, to do for others what my teachers did for me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was year 3. I had a student who had come from El Salvador. I remember it being cold outside, and his sweater fitting small on him, with holes all around. I went to the store to buy him and jacket. I still remember the look on his face when I gave it to him the next day. I was able to get him a new backpack and more clothes within time. I worked with him as much as I could. He grew so much academically in the little time I had him. I will never forget him.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000, I would continue giving to my students. I can’t count on my fingers the many times I wish I could provide the things they need/want, knowing I can’t due to my financial status. Being able to get them a new pair of shoes, backpack, school supplies, etc., helps them feel seen, loved, included. This also makes it that much easier for them to WANT to come to school and learn. With this money, I would also invest in resources to make school that much more exciting for them.
