Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher, because I want to make a difference in the lives of others and instill in our students the ability to understand the importance of education. Real-world experiences are imperative and preparing our students with life skills are very important to me. I use to run a summer educational camp at Wright State University. When I saw the "lightbulb" shine bright or observing those "ah-ha" moments, I knew what an impact I was making. Learning about our world is quite essential!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience was teaching my students about "Sea Turtle Conservation." I was lucky enough to be invited to participate with the Inwater Research Group and go out on a boat in the gulf. We worked with marine biologists to learn about why it is important to protect our wildlife. Upon return to my classroom, I was allowed to use two turtle trunks with multiple lessons. Lifelike sea turtles (different sizes, weights, health, etc.) were used for labs with my students. The loved it!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I would use the $25,000 to make my home wheelchair accessible for my spouse. She has Ankylosing Spondylitis, amongst other autoimmune diseases. She is able to walk a little bit, but when it comes to long distances, she has to use a wheelchair. She has a motorized wheelchair, but is unable to use it in our home. We do not have level flooring. The rest of the money will go towards my classroom and the Backpack program (through Operation Heartfelt) that I run for our at-risk youth.
