Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to help students be the best version of themselves. I have been teaching almost 10 years. I work in a district where not everyone comes from a flourishing home. I struggle to have my own children and have made it my mission to give all my energy back my students. I support them not just for the year I have them but throughout their whole educational journey. I advocate daily so students receive the best education possible. I want to help give every kid a fight chance!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I took my class to the Hershey zoo. It was the most amazing thing I’ve witnessed. Many of my students have never been to a zoo or interacted with animals in this capacity. The learning and connections that occurred in just a few hours was vital in making their classroom experience come alive. They were so appreciative and multiple students told me it was the best day of their lives. One student said, “I can’t believe you took me here. I love you Ms. M”. All students deserve these opportunities.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to continue to try to have a child of my own. It’s unfortunate that the USA has made IVF treatments so difficult to afford for the average working person. Everyone deserves to love a child of their own. I would put the rest of the money back in to create more opportunities for my students. It’s important that students continue their education outside the classroom. I would help fund student field trips so they could experience valuable lessons outside of the classroom.
