Nelle May Stephenson

Teaching has allowed me to be a part of children’s lives for 36 years! They force me to learn more & more in order to teach them more.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I began education classes because I was waiting to go to Physical Therapy school and hated being the only one of my friends not in school. I absolutely loved the professors and planning lessons. When the time came to start PT school, I withdrew my acceptance and finished the certification process. I tried to stop teaching several times, but something always changed my plans and forced me to stay. I finally accepted that I was being called to teach and now in my 36th year.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Every year is memorable for many different reasons. There have been years that were more frustrating than fun; years that have been filled with profound sadness; years of incredible academic accolades. It has been such a privilege and honor to teach! Recently, I was thanked for challenging them to think, for forcing them to get out of their comfort zone, and for providing a place of acceptance and love to all students. I think that has been one of the most memorable moments in my career.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would go to the Galápagos Islands. Evolution has been one of my favorite topics to teach. As a single mother, I could never justify spending the money on myself. I hope to establish a scholarship at my school as well. Hopefully there would be enough to do both!
