Tell us why you became a teacher

My earliest memory of belonging came when I participated in the state Elementary Honor Choir. I am so grateful to my elementary music teacher for seeing my potential and going above her contractual expectations to provide me with an opportunity to foster and showcase my talents. Now, as an elementary music teacher myself, I provide my students with ample opportunities to make music and memories outside of the classroom.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences was seeing my third graders’ presentation of learning following their recorder unit. The students played and marched alongside our local high school’s marching band, playing pep band tunes. Our extracurricular flute club also performed in the parade, which was attended by the student body, parents, and community members. It was incredible to see the joy on the students’ faces having shared their talents in a practical approach that energized the audience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

This summer, I am attending the Music Will “Modern Band Summit” in Colorado to gain culturally relevant instructional strategies to bring back to my elementary music classroom. With $25,000, I would purchase a classroom set of mini Stratocaster guitars, mini bass guitars, amps, snare drums, cymbals, bucket drums, and other appropriate instruments. These instruments would be used to build community, spark inspiration, and further teach the national and state music standards.
