Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to share my life's experience and knowledge of Criminal Law, Law Enforcement procedures, and Criminal Investigations. I felt giving back what cannot be read in a book is just as important as knowledge from a textbook. I wanted students to know there are people from all walks of life in careers they never dreamed possible. I wanted students to know I care, and influence at least one student and change their life for the better.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable teaching experience was the day a student asked if I'd help him fill out the police academy application. Of course I said yes! The student sat day in and day out in my classroom for two years, not showing the slightest interest in police work. He replied, "Mrs.Ott, I want to do what you did. You inspired me." Best day ever!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to provide my students with an amazing fieldtrip to the Brevard Police Museum about an hour and a half south of our school. I would follow that up with a day at the court house watching a trial. I'd end the experience with a dinner for them and their parents to show my love and appreciation for all of them. My program has to be self sufficient and has grown to over 500 students. There simply is not enough funds to take them on trips and it would be great to treat them.
