Tell us why you became a teacher

I have my bachelors in social work, but felt like I wasn't able to build strong relationships with my clients, like I wanted to in the field I was in. I decided to go back to get my masters in special education, after subbing at a school. I realized teaching kids allowed me to build relationships with them, that helped them become the best learner they can be. I meet the kids where they are at academically. I have to build rapport with them before I can get the best work out of them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I think my favorite experience, is having my students join in on their IEP meetings when they are in the 4th and 5th grade. They become more self aware and are my understanding. I love when they can come and engage in the conversations with the adults at the meetings and also ask questions that will benefit them in their academic careers. I love being able to help my students find their voice!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I first would buy some things for my classroom that has been on my wishlist for a while. I do not get any budget at my school and it all comes out of my pocket. I would then do some house projects to make my house feel more homey, and get everyone in my house their own space to unwind. My husband and I bought a house in the country that wasn't our favorite layout, but we bought it for the land and space we would be provided. I want to make this house feel more like us.
