Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up in poverty as the eldest of three, I never saw college as an option—until AVID changed my life. My teachers believed in me, gave me skills, and empowered me to take charge of my future. Their guidance helped me break the cycle and achieve my dreams. I became a teacher to show students their potential, equip them with tools for success, and ensure they know their future is limitless. Just as my teachers gave me a bright future, I am committed to doing the same for the next generation.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Jesus, a quiet middle schooler, doubted himself. Through AVID, he built confidence, led discussions, and set big goals. One day, he proudly shared that he was accepted into an early college program. “I did it!” he beamed. Seeing his growth reminded me why I teach—to empower students to believe in themselves. AVID isn’t just about school; it’s about building a future. Just as my teachers changed my life, I strive to do the same for my students daily.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I’d expand exposure to innovation through field trips, provide updated technology, fund student scholarships, and host family nights to strengthen support. I’d also invest in positive, influential guest speakers from noteworthy organizations. This funding would empower them with skills, confidence, and opportunities to take charge of their future—just as AVID once did for me!
