Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher when I had kids of my own. I realized how important it is to have to have a village that supports you and wants your family to thrive. As a teacher, I can provide that to other families. I took a job in a low income district and I have developed so many positive connections with students and parents. My classroom is known as a safe place for students to grow and learn, and I am so thankful that I was given this opportunity to be a positive role model.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was during frog dissections last semester. The students were squeamish and gagging over the smell, which always makes me laugh. One of the stomachs of the frog seemed overfilled and I advised the students to carefully cut it open. We found the remains of a small mouse inside, bones and all! The students were SO EXCITED. It was as if everyone got over the ick and got so passionate about science!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use some of the $25,000 to pay off the debt I accumulated while completing my 6 months of student teaching (for free). With this financial freedom, it would open up more opportunities to provide supplies and treats for students in my classes, as well as snacks for students who come from extremely low income families. I teach science and push to do as many labs as possible. While virtual labs are amazing, I would have extra funding to complete more in-class labs.
