Tell us why you became a teacher

How do I relay why I became a teacher in 500 characters? I’ll try my best! Teaching is transformative when educators build meaningful connections with students and their families. Relationships are foundational. When students feel safe, valued, and supported, they take academic risks, grow in confidence, and develop a positive mindset. That’s why I became a teacher—it’s about so much more than just delivering lessons; it’s about creating an environment where students feel loved and valued.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was with a sixth-grade boy who, on his first day, told me, “I hate school, and I hate you.” I knew we were in for a journey—and I was right! While our year was filled with many ups, and a few downs, we made it through. On the last day, during our school's 6th Grade Continuation ceremony, that same boy stood up, walked over to me, and hugged me, tears streaming down his cheeks. In that moment, I knew I had successfully "completed" my job!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Being blessed with a $25,000 prize would be incredible! While taking my family to Italy, one of my husband’s bucket list destinations, would be at the top of my list, I would prioritize paying off some of our medical debt from treatments for our two neurodiverse children and my husband's cancer surgeries. A trip to Italy would be a wonderful bonus, but relieving our financial burden would truly benefit our family and help us move forward with less stress.
