I feel like I was born a teacher. At a young age, I used to choreograph shows and presentations in my neighborhood with all of the children who lived there. As an adult, I volunteered at my son's elementary school and designed multicultural activities for his class each week. I was always asked where I taught, and I replied that I was not a teacher. One day I realized that I had been teaching all along and that I had a calling to teach. I changed careers and never looked back. I love my job!

I have so many memorable experiences but what I really love is seeing the direct impact that I have had on students throughout my 20+ years of teaching. Following their journey as they grow into adults is a blessing. Each year, prior students reach out to tell me that I inspired them to also become teachers. I am so touched to hear those words and I love watching them embark on their educational journey. Serving as a mentor to those that wish to teach is an honor.

I would use the money from this contest to help get myself a home. After Covid, and then the hurricanes, I had some difficult times and this would really help me get back on my feet. I would also put some of it towards replenishing the project materials in my classroom so that my students can continue to learn through hands-on immersive activities. I also run an after school program for at-risk youth who are struggling academically and this money will help get much needed snacks for them.
