Tell us why you became a teacher

It was a calling God placed on my life when I was a teenager. I had my first part time position at the age of 17, working at a Montessori school. Fast forward: I'm now 51 and have taught every single grade from pre-k through 8th grade. My heart is definitely with elementary and hope to be able to keep doing so as long as God calls me to do so!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are several, but one in particular was years ago I was "warned" (previous teacher) about an incoming student who I would have to separate/send to the office. I did what all teachers should do: nurture, support, and love this child. I didn't separate him, ever. He thrived and did a great job! Years later his mom found me on social media to share with me his essay on who is their hero: he wrote about me. Yes I bawled, thanked God for blessing me with this job, and equipping me to do so!

What would you do with the $25,000?

As sad as it is to say, I still owe on my student loan. The bulk of my career as been teaching in private schools so my salary is pretty low (I have 2 part time jobs to make ends meet). As a single mom, I was on the income driven repayment plan, so for many years I didn't have to make a payment (couldn't afford to anyway). My child is now in college so I would use it to finally pay off my debt.
